The Unilever Series, an annual commission invites an internationally renowned artist to create a new, inspirational work of art for the Tate Modern’s massive Turbine Hall. This year the artist who has been called to exhibit ingenuity and creativity is Ai Weiwei, one of China’s leading Conceptual artists and an outspoken cultural and social commentator. His creation titled the “Sunflower Seeds” showcase millions of small works, which are apparently identical, but have their own separate identity.
Forming a unique carpet for people to walk, the countless life-sized sunflower seed husks are poured into the gallery’s large hall to form an extraordinary landscape. Each seed has been intricately hand-crafted in porcelain and then painted by specialists working in small-scale workshops in the Chinese city of Jingdezhen. I believe no visitor weather young or old would be able to stop himself from the temptation of lying or throw up a handful of them.
