European Solar Decathlon 2010 was looking for solar houses that were affordable, energy efficient and comfortable and finally after 10 days of serious scrutinizing, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University’s entry was declared the winner. Dubbed the “Lumenhaus”, this solar-powered home includes components and systems that have been specially designed to work in coordination to maximize user comfort with environmental protection.
Taking inspiration from architect Mies Van Der Rohe’s Farnsworth House, the Virginia Tech modified their ultra-sustainable house that placed 13th out of 20 in last year’s competition to stand out this year. The zero-energy home now includes features like solar panels on the roof, electronic systems monitored by an iPhone app along with LEDs and multiple glass walls for maximum sun exposure. The 800-square-foot home has open, flowing spaces that help in making a beautiful relationship between occupants and nature. The house also incorporates “plug-in stairs and entryways” that can be stacked up to create a two, three, or four-bedroom home.
