Few years back it was wireless transfer of voice and data that brought the communication revolution. Also, it was MIT few years back that came to news with the possibility of wireless transfer of power. What this meant was that you would never have to plug-in your laptop, iPad or iPhone and these devices would get electrically charged through a central device that would transmit electricity. The concept itself was named as WiTricity and promised power transfer up to two meters of distance. The researchers were able to light up a 60W lightbulb from a distance of seven meters. The concept was based on the fact that two resonant objects with similar resonant frequency exchange energy efficiently, while interacting weakly with other nearby devices.
Product designer, Lee Ashton, has revived the concept by introducing a Wi-Tricity router that functions just like Wi-Fi boxes. It works as a router as well as a receiver system, and is based on technology used by the MIT people. The designer has added a light tube in the center that would light up in case excessive energy is used from the system, thereby reducing waste of energy.
The device uses extremely low frequency electromagnetic waves that range up to maximum of thirty meters. Such waves are harmless, but this also means that antennas have to be bigger and 60 percent of energy is wasted. Surprisingly, Nikolas Tesla tried to implement something similar few decades back but felt short of money and could never build such device. He built a 29m high tower in New York for long-range wireless energy transfer.
The concept will utilize an antenna made of copper, which in turn will be connected to the mains. Power will be transferred from the mains to the antenna. The antenna would be made to resonate at a particular frequency and this will in turn produce electromagnetic waves. The energy travels up to the distance of up to two meters . This energy is tapped by the antenna connected to the device which needs to be charged. The good thing is that the energy not transferred to the device is reabsorbed by the source antenna. The device will make your home wire free and you wouldn’t have to deal with the mess created by them anymore.
