The Japanese capital was proud to flag off the world’s first taxis with easily swapped batteries yesterday. Hitting the streets of Tokyo, the electric taxis a part of a government-funded pilot project to test the emission-free cars, certainly succeeded in making a great green impression. This 90-day experiment is a joint project with Better Place, a US firm specializing in providing electric vehicle infrastructure.
Under the project, three Nissan Dualis based cars will be run as taxis that will help in saving the environment. The driver no longer has to stand in queues to get the battery recharges. All that has to be done is swap the battery with the charged one. Apart from that, the need to switch over to other fuels when the car’s battery gives up is also eliminated. If this initiative works well, we can hope to see a few more taxi doing some good to the economy and environment in a city that has almost 60,000 cabs running each day.
