Ever since its’ opening in September 2008, the California Academy of Sciences which is the ‘greenest museum in the world’ has become the only such facility to have earned LEED Platinum certification. The urban facility integrates sustainable technology, natural systems, design innovation, and public education to achieve this remarkable standing.
Built on an outmoded, earthquake damaged complex the new facility is spread over 1.5 acres of land with addition of gardens. Once again it’s the green roof that holds the key to sustainability. The roof captures rain water, improves the air quality besides creating a small eco system for the local and migratory fauna. Other features include a water recycling plant and ventilated openings in the building curtain walls and roof domes.
