An artist’s bent of mind to create unique pieces of art leaves many baffled. While looking at a beautiful painting or sketch, it at times becomes very difficult to guess what all materials have been used in the creation. Cliff Maynard based in Pittsburgh is one such artist whose artwork named Chronic Art, looks stunning but when one learns what all has gone in to making the portraits, it leaves people stumped.
A tattoo artist by profession, Cliff during his days at the school of art picked up all the nuisances that went in to create mosaics. He crafts portraits of very famous faces, in other words celebrities in hues of gold and brown. The golden brown color combination is quite rich and attracts a lot of attention. When someone looks at his creation they switch into a mode of awe. Each portrait has a crisp and neat appearance. The faces look life-like and stick out with all the fine details intact.
But if you move a little closer towards the portrait and sprinkle some time to focus and try figuring out the materials used, I bet your jaw will drop in astonishment. What you had been thinking all the while to be paint or maybe brown paper in actuality is something you would have never thought in your wildest dreams. All the mosaics crafted by Cliff Maynard use roach papers of smoked joints as raw material. The secret ingredient is actually waste which otherwise would have poisoned our beautiful environment.
Though smoking is injurious to health and adds harmful ingredients to our surroundings, the artist has made an effort to at least make sure what is left after smoking does not ruin the environment further. He has crafted portraits of Jesus, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, Snoop Dog, Method Man to name a few out of roach papers of smoked joints. The mosaics look fabulous and yell the ‘Go Green’ slogan.
