What do you think a professor at University of Michigan does in his leisure? Reads those heavy books? Gets involved in various discourses? and things like that? Well most of the professors do that in their free time but this professor, known as Matthew Shlian does origami. He folds papers and makes Piece D’Art. The artist has recently unveiled his beautiful series of paper works called The Tessellation Series. True to its name the series is basically a collection of various mosaic like structures in paper. The series is available for sale at the Ghostly store.
Shlian started working on The Tessellation Series in the beginning of 2011 and finished it after months of hard-work and thoughtful approach. The series takes inspiration from vibrating and lively electronic music and kind of examines elementary geometrical shapes and designs in his work.
In the words of Shlian,
In my studio I am a collaborator, explorer and inventor. I begin with a system of folding and at a particular moment the material takes over. Guided by wonder, my work is made because I cannot visualize its final realization; in this way I come to understanding through curiosity.
Shlian is an MFA graduate from Cranbook Academy and began collaborating with The Ghostly Store in the beginning of 2011. His first series of work with The Ghostly was named as The Process Series. His second collection also evokes the joy of spontaneity and hints at the more inspiring and thought provoking works to come in near future.
