Oakland can now boast of having its first ever El taco Bike, a mobile vehicle that offers lip smacking Mexican delights. But there is really nothing new about mobile food trucks, so what makes this one special? Well, it is one that is pedal powered and does not run on gasoline. The fascinating El Taco Bike is a three-wheeler that offers delicious Mexican taqueria food like tacos de canasta (steamed tacos) and tortas diabolicas (meatball sandwiches). The El Taco Bike is the cool eco friendly alternative of the old gasoline guzzling taco trucks.

Alfonso Dominguez is the owner of El Taco Bikes and he also co-owns the high-end restaurant Tamarindo and its chilled out sister La Calle Asadero. Dominguez firmly believes that the El Taco Bike has the potential to develop into a new kind of street culture. This Mexican food serving three-wheeler made a debut during Oakland’s Bike-To-Work day.

The bike has been built by Todd Barricklow and has been painted by artist Misty Avila Ovalles. The bike has a shiny chrome exterior and flaunts an orange trim and paintings with strong Mexican influence, for instance, the masked face of a Mexican wrestler or the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

One might feel that the El Taco Bike is just another bike carrying food. But make no mistake, the El Taco Bike is not just another bike. It is the ultimate food contraption which comes with features like a hot and cold water sink, steam pans that can be heated by propane gas, a small table that can hold condiments, and that is not all. The vehicle has its own trashcan, umbrella holder and stereo system! With so many features there is a huge chance that the vehicle would be a heavy one but surprisingly the El Taco Bike is extremely easy to handle and offers a smooth ride.

According to the guidelines of the Department of Health, Dominguez will have to stick to reheating the food in the El Taco Bike. He is not permitted to cook food on that bike, so he stocks up on sandwiches, tamales and burritos from La Calle Asadero’s kitchen before he ventures out. All the food items are priced between $2 to $8.

One can safely say that along with serving delicious Mexican delights, the El Taco Bike is in a way a green option of selling street food. In its own way, the El Taco Bike is making way for a smart green option of selling street food. One can only hope that others follow this unique example of conserving the fast depleting fossil fuel reserves.
