The retro electronic items made of paper (the one displayed here and many more in the gallery) are so cute and adorable that I am inspired to try my hand at designing something close, if I can. Today’s children are so fond of gadgets that if they happen to see any of these displayed here, their parents shall be at their witâs end designing one for their childâs craving imagination.
What is even more appealing is the use of paper wholly for the design. These fascinating retro electronics have been shaped out of sustainable paper in various colors and have been made to perfection. These cute gadgets are a display of the delicacy and simplicity lying within the design. They reveal the tremendous effort put in by the designers in shaping these blueprints.
Contemporary designers Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann are the names behind these cute gadgets. The designers have come together to form the Zim and Zou design studio, which is a French graphic design studio based in Nancy (France). The artistsâ strength lies in blending complementary and polyvalent art for which they seem to have put all their graphic design learnt in art school into actual application through these retro electronics. This work of the studio has been labeled Back to Basics.
If you thought that this was easier done than said, think again. It has taken almost a year for the designers to have come up with these colorful and handy gadgets. The hidden feather on the cap is the fact that each bit of paper used in making these retro gadgets has been re-used to be included in the smallest of the components of the gadgets. The artists have a stuck to strict âno-noâ to any wastage of paper.
Working with paper may seem to be a childâs work but it is not that easy considering the fact that you have to use each bit of paper judiciously to avoid wastage. I think most of the paper bits go to inhabit the dustbin when a novice (like me) goes to design something out of it. After seeing the commendable efforts of Zim and Zou, even I am inspired to design something for my kids. It is a very good idea designing innovative items, like the Back to Basics, instead of just picking them up from the shops all over. Simple tools (like paper used in case of the retro electronic items) can deliver extraordinary outputs.
